A different electric utility

Most homes in Eagle River, Chugiak and Peters Creek are served by Matanuska Electric Association (MEA), not Chugach Electric. That affects who you call about outages, service upgrades, meter work and generator notifications. Service territory edges can vary, so check your bill or confirm your address with the utility.

Permits and inspections: what is different

Municipal building permits and inspections are administered within the Building Safety Service Area. Reporting from 2019 — after the November 2018 earthquake damaged homes in the area — described Eagle River and Chugiak as outside that service area for residential plan review and inspection, and noted that residents had previously declined proposals to expand it.

We could not confirm whether that has changed as of our last review. Before starting a project, ask the Municipality’s Development Services whether a permit and inspection apply to your address and type of work.

Backup power, wells and winter

Like the upper Hillside, many Eagle River and Chugiak homes rely on private wells, so a power outage can also mean no running water. Generator planning should include the well pump, heating appliance, and any heat trace protecting water lines. See standby generators and transfer switches.

Outdoor electrical equipment here contends with substantial snow; plan generator, meter and exterior outlet locations so they stay accessible after plowing and roof shedding.

ZIP code notes

Eagle River is associated with ZIP 99577 and Chugiak with 99567 in postal and third-party directories. Some addresses in these areas use PO boxes in separate ZIP codes. Use the USPS ZIP lookup for a specific address.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need an electrical permit in Eagle River?

It depends on whether your address is inside the Municipality’s Building Safety Service Area and on the type of work. Reporting from 2019 described Eagle River and Chugiak as outside that area for residential plan review and inspections. We could not confirm whether that has changed, so ask Development Services before starting work.

If no inspection is required, can anyone do my electrical work?

No. Alaska law still governs who may perform electrical work for hire: a registered electrical contractor tied to a licensed electrical administrator, with workers holding state certificates of fitness. Without a municipal inspection, checking credentials and keeping documentation of the work is even more important. Our licensing guide explains how to check.

Who do I call during an outage in Eagle River or Chugiak?

Most of the area is served by Matanuska Electric Association. Check your bill to confirm, and use MEA’s outage reporting line or map. If you have a generator connected to your home, follow your transfer switch procedure and never back-feed through an outlet.

Can I get a generator or panel quote in Eagle River?

Yes — callers from Eagle River and Chugiak are handled like any other. Availability depends on the referral partner and its providers.
